초록
The study is conducted to investigate the uses of English demonstratives in argumentative essays between native English speakers and two groups (high score and low score) of Vietnamese EFL learners. Demonstratives in 80 essays of all three groups were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively, along with two dimensions of categorization: proximity (distal and proximal demonstratives) and three basic pragmatic uses (exophoric, anaphoric and discourse deictic use) of demonstratives. The research also proposes important recommendations for the instruction of demonstratives in EFL context in Vietnam.
