Edmund Burke (1729-97) was a British statesman, a political philosopher, a literary critic, the grandfather of modern conservatism, and an elegant, prolific letter writer and prose stylist. His most important letters, filled with sparkling prose and profound insights, are gathered here for the first time in one volume. 하비 맨스필드(엮은이)
하비 맨스필드는 하버드대학 정치학과 교수로'미국인문학센터National Humanities Center'의 연구원이기도 하다. 2004년 정치철학 분야의 연구 성과를 인정받아'국립인문학재단(NEH)'에서 수여하는 ‘인문학 훈장National Humanities Medal’을 받았다. 레오 스트라우스의 정치철학에 깊은 영향을 받았으며, 에드먼드 버크, 알렉시스 드 토크빌, 마키아벨리의 권위자로 활발한 저술 활동을 펼치고 있다. 토크빌의『미국의 민주주의Democracy in America』, 마키아벨리의『군주론The Prince』과『리비우스 논고Discourses on Livy』등을 공역했으며,『마키아벨리의 미덕Machiavelli’s Virtue』,『미국의 헌법 정신America’s Constitutional Soul』등을 저술했다. 맨스필드는 다양한 정치적 문제에 있어 보수적인 입장을 견지하는 논객으로도 유명하며『월스트리트 저널』,『더 위클리 스탠다드』,『타임스 리터러리 서플러먼트』등에 기고하고 있다. 후쿠야마와 더불어 네오콘의 핵심 이론가로 평가 받는다.
