스티븐 룩스(지은이)
1941년 영국에서 출생하여, 옥스포드 대학에서 사회학 학부, 석사학위를 마친 후 동 대학에서 뒤르켕에 대한 논문으로 박사학위를 취득하였다. 이후 옥스포드 대학의 Balliol College에서 교편을 시작하였으며 이태리의 University of Siena, 프랑스의 the European University Institute (Florence) 그리고 런던의 the London School of Economics 등에서의 교수직을 거쳐 현재 미국 뉴욕주립대학 (New York University)에서 교수로 재직하면서, 팔순이 훨씬 넘는 고령에도 불구하고 현재까지 연구 활동을 지속하고 있다. 저자는 또한 1974년부터 1983년까지는 The Committee for the History of Sociology of the International Sociological Association의 의장, 그리고 1995년부터 1996년까지는 European Forum on Citizenship의 이사를 동시에 역임한 바 있다. 그의 연구 관심 영역은 정치 및 사회이론, 뒤르켕의 사회이론, 도덕 사회학, 자유주의 이론에 대한 연구, 그리고 권력이론 등이다. 본서 이외의 주요 저서로는 Moral Relativism (2008), Liberals and Cannibals (2003), Moral Conflict and Politics (1991), Marxism and Morality (1985), Essays in Social Theory (1977), Individualism (1973), Emile Durkheim: His Life and Work (1972) 등이 있다. 본서는 현대적 권력 이론의 가장 중요한 출발점으로 평가받고 있으며, 권력논쟁, 지배논쟁 등의 권력과 지배에 관한 (현재까지도 지속되고 있는) 중요한 논쟁들을 촉발시킨 산실이라고 간주된다.
