프랑스를 대표하는 현대 철학자. 알랭 르노, 질 리포베츠키 등과 더불어 루이 알튀세르, 장 보드리야르, 미셸 푸코, 피에르 부르디외, 자크 데리다 같은 프랑스 68혁명 세대를 비판적으로 계승하는 소장학자다. 파리4대학과 하이델베르크대학에서 철학을 공부하고 랭스대학에서 정치학으로 국가박사학위를 받았다. 이후 캉대학, 파리7대학 등에서 교수를 지냈다. 알랭 르노와 함께 쓴 책 《68 사상La pensee '68》(1985)으로 처음 작가로서 유명세를 얻기 시작했으며, 이후 1994년부터 2002년까지 교육부 국가자문위원회 회장을 역임했다. 2002년부터는 장 피에르 라파랭 정부에서 교육부 장관을 지냈다. 철학자로서 뤽 페리는 그동안 주로 종교와 분리된 인문주의를 주창해 왔다. 그의 저서는 지금까지 전 세계 30여개 언어로 번역되었다. 《두려움을 극복하다Vaincre les peurs》, 《인간이란 무엇인가?Qu'est-ce que l'homme?》(장 디디에 뱅상과 공저, 한국어판 제목은 《철학적 인간, 생물학적 인간》) 등이 좋은 반응을 얻었으며, 프랑스 인권문학상을 수상한 《인간-신 또는 삶의 의미L'Homme-Dieu ou le sens de la vie》, 메데치상(에세이 부문)과 장 자크 루소 상을 받은 《새로운 생태학적 질서Le Nouvel Ordre ?cologique》, 도덕?정치과학 아카데미 에르네스트-토렐 상을 수상한 《현대인의 지혜La sagesse des modernes》(앙드레 콩트-스퐁빌과 공저), 《사랑 혁명La R?volution de l'amour》 등 의미 있는 저작 활동을 활발하게 계속해 오고 있다. 특히 지은이가 외딴 휴가지에서 무료함을 못 견딘 지인들에게 서양철학의 흐름을 이야기로 풀어 들려주는 《철학으로 묻고 삶으로 답하다Apprendre ? vivre》는 프랑스는 물론 영어권에서도 베스트셀러로 오랫동안 사랑받아 왔다.
