Recent years have seen the emergence of a new speciality: counselling in primary care. Addressing the question of whether counselling and the psychological therapies are competitors for the same market, this book deals with the assessment of patients in community centres and family settings, and in general practice clinics, in relation to emotional and psychological problems. The author describes the range of typical problems encountered in primary care, reviews the experience and outcomes of the main approaches and therapies and offers practical methods for assessment of patients in the context of primary care. The evaluation of primary care counselling and therapy and the development of the professional primary care practice are also covered. The book emphasizes counselling and psychotherapy by focusing on the less serious disorders and offers guidance to the community mental health professional and the family doctor on appropriate and cost effective treatment.
