The centuries are the fifth (the final days of the Roman Empire); the fourteenth (the years of the Black Death); and the twentieth (World War II). The setting for each is the same-Provence-and each has at its heart a love story. The narratives intertwine seamlessly, but what joins them thematically is an ancient text-"The Dream of Scipio"-a work of neo-Platonism that poses timeless philosophical questions. 영미권을 비롯한 세계 각국에서 높은 평가를 받는 중견 작가다. 그는 뛰어난 미술사가이자 저널리스트며, 역사.예술.종교.철학 등 다방면에 대한 해박한 지식을 갖췄다. 바로크 시대가 전개된 과정을 탐구한 그의 책《회화의 발견》은 미술사에 관한 최고의 저작으로 꼽힌다. 미술사에 관한 조예를 바탕으로 《라파엘로의 유혹》, 《티치아노 위원회》 등 ‘미술사 미스터리’ 연작과 《핑거포스트, 1663》, 《스키피오의 꿈》을 발표해 언론의 찬사를 받으며 명성을 얻었다. 1955년 8월 영국에서 태어나 옥스퍼드의 와덤 칼리지를 졸업했으며, 울프슨 칼리지에서 미술사 연구로 박사 학위를 받았다. 20대 초반에는 이탈리아.그리스.프랑스 등지에서 영어 교사로 일했고, 1982년부터 1990년까지는 [로이터 통신] 특파원으로 로마.파리.뉴욕.런던에서 활동했다. 뉴욕 특파원 시절에는 예일대학의 인문과학연구소에서 특별연구원으로 지냈다. 1990년부터 영국 BBC와 독일 ZDF의 컨설턴트로 일했고, 지금은 풍부한 자료와 연구를 바탕으로 저작에 몰두하고 있다.
