Originally published in Romanian in 1933, this semiautobiographical novel by the world-renowned scholar Mircea Eliade details the passionate awakenings of Alain, an ambitious young French engineer flush with colonial pride and prejudice and full of a European fascination with the mysterious subcontinent.Offered the hospitality of a senior Indian colleague, Alain grasps at the chance to discover the authentic India firsthand. He soon finds himself enchanted by his host's daughter, the lovely and inscrutable Maitreyi, a precocious young poet and former student of Tagore. What follows is a charming, tentative flirtation that soon, against all the proprieties and precepts of Indian society, blossoms into a love affair both impossible and ultimately tragic. This erotic passion plays itself out in Alain's thoughts long after its bitter conclusion. In hindsight he sets down the story, quoting from the diaries of his disordered days, and trying to make sense of the sad affair.A vibrantly poetic love story, Bengal Nights is also a cruel account of the wreckage left in the wake of a young man's self-discovery. 미르치아 엘리아데(지은이)
엘리아데는 1907년 루마니아의 부쿠레슈티에서 태어나 부쿠레슈티대학에서 이탈리아 철학 연구로 철학 석사 학위를 받았다. 그후 인도 캘커타대학에서 3년간 산스크리트와 인도 철학을 공부하였으며, 1933년 부쿠레슈티대학으로 돌아와 요가 연구로 박사 학위를 받고 부쿠레슈티대학의 교수를 지냈다. 그후 1945년에 파리 소르본대학의 종교학 객원 교수가 되었고, 1956년에 시카고대학의 교수로 부임하여 그곳에서 30년 이상을 가르쳤다. 20세기의 가장 위대한 종교학자인 이 거인은 그의 필생의 대작이자 위대한 학문적 업적으로 꼽히는 『세계종교사상사』를 3권까지 집필한 후인 1986년 4월 22일에 시카고에서 영면하였다. 주요 저서로 『세계종교사상사』(전3권), 『영원회귀의 신화』, 『종교형태론』, 『성과 속』, 『이미지와 상징』, 『요가』, 『샤마니즘』, 『대장장이와 연금술사』, 『종교의 의미』, 『벵갈의 밤』 등이 있다.
