미국의 사회학자. 텍사스대학교(오스틴)를 졸업하고 위스콘신대학교(매디슨)에서 박사학위를 받았다. 메릴랜드대학교를 거쳐 뉴욕의 컬럼비아대학교 사회학과에서 일했다. 20세기 영어권 전체를 대표하는 사회학자 중 한 명으로 꼽힌다. 좁은 기술적 주제를 다루는 가치 중립적 학문을 자처하던 주류 사회학계에 맞서, 권력과 구조의 문제에 대한 비판적 분석의 길을 열었다. 미국과 소련, 기득권이 된 노동조합 운동 모두에 비판적인 독립적 지식인이었다. 신좌파 운동에도 앞장섰다. 스스로 집을 짓고 목공을 하고 차를 수리했다. 네 번째 심장마비로 45세의 이른 나이에 세상을 떠났지만, 『화이트칼라』, 『파워엘리트』, 『사회학적 상상력』과 같이 통찰력으로 가득 찬 대표작을 남겼다.
