2002년 1월 린다 수 박에게 뉴베리상을 안겨 주며 화제가 됐던 동화. 린다 수 박은 미국에서 태어나 자랐지만 부모님 모두가 한국인인 이민 2세이다. 이 책은 한국적 소재의 동화로 상을 받았다 하여 우리나라에서 더욱 큰 관심을 모았다.

때는 12세기 고려 시대, 장소는 도자기 마을 줄포. 목이는 어려서부터 자신을 돌봐 준 두루미 아저씨와 단둘이 다리 밑에서 살아간다. 하루하루 끼니를 걱정해야 하는 처지로 쓰레기더미를 뒤지는 게 하루 일과이지만 두 사람은 자기 손으로 먹을 것을 구한다는 데 자긍심을 가지고 산다.

그러나 목이는 도공이 되고 싶다는 간절한 소원을 가지고 있다. 마을 최고의 도공 민 영감을 몰래 훔쳐보던 어느 날, 목이는 민 영감의 도자기를 깨뜨린다. 며칠 동안 일해 빚을 갚기로 약속한 목이는 도자기 만드는 과정을 계속 돕게 된다.

목이가 여러 고난을 딛고 자신의 목표를 향해 한 걸음씩 나아가는 과정을 그려냈다. 아름다운 고려청자의 세계와 그런 청자를 빚어내기 위한 도공들의 장인 정신이 인상적인 동시에, 한 아이가 자신의 꿈을 이뤄가는 과정을 그린 성장동화이다.

Tree-ear, an orphan, lives under a bridge in Ch’ulp’o, a potters’ village famed for delicate celadon ware. He has become fascinated with the potter’s craft; he wants nothing more than to watch master potter Min at work, and he dreams of making a pot of his own someday. When Min takes Tree-ear on as his helper, Tree-ear is elated ? until he finds obstacles in his path: the backbreaking labor of digging and hauling clay, Min’s irascible temper, and his own ignorance.
