As the demand for ever-increasing computer processing speeds continues to grow, it has become apparent that parallel computing is perhaps the only way to adequately propel computer technology into the next century. But designing and building large parallel computers might not be the most challenging task at hand; difficult software problems also exist that require the development of new solution algorithms capable of supporting many parallels. This volume addresses these problems by discussing parallel processing applications, the implementation of specific applications for parallel computers, and the development of efficient mathematical algorithms to be used in applications. Topics include an overview of the basic issues and trends in hardware systems software development, the evolution of parallel algorithms in dense linear algebra, parallel algorithms in vision and robotics, and parallel iterative solutions of sparse linear systems on a transputer network.
