1916년 9월 영국 사우스웨일스에서 노르웨이 이민자 부모 아래에서 태어났다. 잉글랜드의 렙턴 스쿨을 졸업한 뒤 대학에 진학하는 대신 한 석유회사의 아프리카 지사에서 근무하게 된다. 2차대전이 일어나자 영국 공군에 지원하여 전투기 조종사로 참전하지만 이집트에서 큰 부상을 입고 공군 중령으로 종전을 맞는다. 이 무렵 로알드 달은 이야기꾼으로서의 소질을 발휘하기 시작한다. 전투기 조종사로서 실전 경험을 담은 단편소설들을 미국의 유력 잡지에 발표하기 시작했는데 그의 기발한 이야기 솜씨는 단숨에 독자들을 사로잡았다. 첫 단편집 『응답 바람』에 이어 두번째 단편집 『당신을 닮은 사람』을 펴냈고 이 책으로 에드거 엘런 포 상과 전미 미스터리 작가상을 수상했다. 도박과 내기에 대한 집착, 속고 속이는 의뭉스러운 술수, 통념으로는 이해할 수 없는 기이한 목표를 향해 놀라운 집념을 발휘하는 인물 등을 보여주면서 인간사의 미묘한 국면을 차근차근 밀도 높은 이야기로 조여붙이는 그의 솜씨는 결말에서 으스스한 반전과 다층적인 유머를 선사하면서 정점에 달한다. 『찰리와 초콜릿 공장』 『제임스와 거대한 복숭아』 『마틸다』 등 전 세계 어린이들이 가장 좋아하는 동화작가이기도 하다. 로알드 달의 작품은 영화와 뮤지컬로도 유명해졌다. 시나리오 작가, 시인, 소설가로서 두루 명성을 얻은 그의 작품은 63개의 언어로 옮겨져 전 세계적으로 2억 부가 판매되기에 이르렀다. 로알드 달은 1990년 11월에 타계했다. 〈타임스〉는 그를 “우리 시대에 가장 널리 읽히고 가장 영향력이 큰 작가 중 한 명”이라고 소개하면서 그의 부고에 이렇게 썼다. “아이들은 그의 이야기를 사랑했고 그를 제일 좋아하는 작가로 꼽았다.
