1930년 미국 샌프란시스코에서 태어난 게리 스나이더는 일찍이 비트문학으로 상징되는 새로운 시운동에 참여했으며 평생을 일관되게 환경운동에 헌신해온 미국을 대표하는 시인 중 하나이다. 리드 대학과 버클리 대학에서 문학과 인류학, 동양학을 공부한 후 일본에 건너가 오랫동안 선승생활을 했다. 1969년 미국 서부로 돌아와 가족과 함께 캘리포니아의 시에라네바다 구릉지에 집을 짓고 환경보호론자, 토착민 그룹과 함께 야생의 삶을 몸소 실천하면서 환경운동과 관련해 국내외에서 많은 활동과 강연을 하는 한편 꾸준히 창작활동을 하고 있다. 1985년부터 캘리포니아 주립대 데이비스 캠퍼스의 교수로 재직했고, 현재는 명예교수다. 주요 저서로는 시집 『신화와 텍스트』, 퓰리처상을 수상한 『거북섬』, 볼링겐상을 수상한 『무한한 산과 강』, 내셔널 북 어워드 수상작으로 추천받았던 『무성』이 있으며, 산문집으로는 『지구, 우주의 한 마을』 등이 있다.
