Bill Masen, bandages over his wounded eyes, misses the most spectacular meteorite shower England has ever seen. Removing his bandages the next morning, he finds masses of sightless people wandering the city. He soon meets Josella, another lucky person who has retained her sight, and together they leave the city, aware that the safe, familiar world they knew a mere twenty-four hours before is gone forever.
But to survive in this post-apocalyptic world, one must survive the Triffids, strange plants that years before began appearing all over the world. The Triffids can grow to over seven feet tall, pull their roots from the ground to walk, and kill a man with one quick lash of their poisonous stingers. With society in shambles, they are now poised to prey on humankind. Wyndham chillingly anticipates bio-warfare and mass destruction, fifty years before their realization, in this prescient account of Cold War paranoia.

아서 C. 클라크, 에릭 F. 러셀과 함께 영국 SF 문학의 대표 작가로 꼽히는 존 윈덤은 잉글랜드 워릭셔 주에서 변호사의 아들로 태어났다. 열여덟 살 때부터 농업, 법조계, 상업 미술 및 광고 등 다양한 분야의 직업에 종사하다가, 1925년 미국 SF 잡지에 단편소설을 기고하면서 글을 쓰기 시작했다. 존 베이넌, 윈덤 파크스 등 여러 필명으로 활동해 온 윈덤은 1931년 5월, 전설적인 SF 편집자 휴고 건즈백이 창간한 잡지 《원더 스토리즈》에 단편 「세계 맞바꾸기」를 게재한다. 이후 본격적으로 미국과 영국의 여러 잡지에 추리소설과 SF 단편을 발표하고 점차 장편으로도 영역을 확대했다. 제2차 세계대전 동안에는 정보부 산하 검열과와 육군 통신대에서 근무하고 노르망디 상륙 작전에 참가하기도 했다. 존 윈덤의 작품 세계는 주로 전쟁을 기점으로 전기와 후기로 나뉜다. 전기에는 스페이스 오페라 계열의 작품을 발표했지만, 후기에는 스스로 ‘논리적 환상소설’이라고 지칭한 진지하고도 현실적인 내용의 소설들을 펴냈는데 이는 훗날 그의 대표작이 되었다. 특히 최초로 세계적인 규모의 대재앙을 다룬 『트리피드의 날』은 생화학 전쟁과 대량살상무기의 등장을 예고하고, 냉전 시대의 불안 심리를 면밀하게 그려 낸 SF 문학의 고전으로 불린다. 『트리피드의 날』 외에도 심해에 침투한 외계 생물체와의 사투를 그린『크라켄 깨어나다』, 외계인과의 접촉으로 초능력을 갖고 태어난 아이들이 등장하는 『미드위치의 뻐꾸기』, 핵전쟁 이후 근본주의 기독교가 득세하는 세계를 배경으로 한 『번데기』 등은 비평적으로나 상업적으로 모두 격찬을 받으며 영화와 드라마로 여러 차례 각색되었다. 그 밖의 작품으로는 장편 『시간의 씨앗』, 『이끼의 문제』, 『외부를 향한 충동』, 『그물』, 『초키』, 중단편집 『그가 하는 것을 보고』 등이 있다.
