미국 역대 대통령들에 관한 전문적인 연구와 저술로 명성을 얻은 손꼽히는 역사학자이다. 컬럼비아대학교, UCLA, 옥스퍼드대학교에서 교수로 재직하다 1996년부터 보스턴대학교 역사학과 교수로 재직하고 있다. 1979년에 출간된 저선 <플랭클린 D.루스벨트와 미국의 외교정책 Franklin D. Roosevelt and American Foreign Policy>은 1980년도 밴크로프트 상 수상작, 전미도서상 후보작으로 선정되었으며, <미국식 외교정책>, '뉴욕 타임스'의 '올해의 책'으로 뽑혔다. 특히 두 권으로 나누어 출간된 린든 존슨 대통령 전기 <거인의 흠집>, <외로이 떠오르는 별>이 격찬을 받으며, 7만 5000부 이상 판매되었다. 그는 앞서 출간한 평전에서 보인 성취에 더해 이 책 <케네디 평전>에서도 그 진가를 인정받아 언론으로부터 '평전의 거장'이란 찬사를 받기도 했다.
