Though W. Somerset Maugham was also famous for his novels and plays, it has been argued that in the short story he reached the pinnacle of his art. These expertly told tales, with their addictive plot twists and vividly drawn characters, are both galvanizing as literature and wonderfully entertaining. In the adventures of his alter ego Ashenden, a writer who (like Maugham himself) turned secret agent in World War I, as well as in stories set in such far-flung locales as South Pacific islands and colonial outposts in Southeast Asia, Maugham brings his characters vividly to life, and their humanity is more convincing for the author’s merciless exposure of their flaws and failures.

서머싯 몸(지은이)
파리 주재 영국 대사관 고문 변호사의 아들로 파리에서 태어났다. 여덟 살 때 어머니가 죽고 2년 뒤에 아버지마저 죽자, 영국으로 건너가 목사인 삼촌 손에 자랐다. 한동안 독일에서 유학 생활을 한 뒤 런던의 의과대학에 입학해 의사 자격을 취득했다. 1897년 첫 소설 《램버스의 라이자》가 엄청난 성공을 거두자, 용기를 내 전업 작가가 되었다. 계속해서 소설, 희곡 등을 쓰다가 1907~1908년 희곡 네 편이 런던의 극장 네 곳에서 동시에 상연되면서 이름을 떨쳤다. 1915년 1차 세계대전 직전에 완성한 《인간의 굴레》는 작가가 고독한 청소년 시절을 거쳐 유미주의적 인생관을 확립하기까지 정신적 발자취를 더듬은 자서전적 대작이었으나 출간 당시에는 인정을 받지 못했다. 그의 유미주의적 태도는 1919년 화가 폴 고갱의 삶에서 영감을 얻은 《달과 6펜스》에서 더욱 뚜렷해졌고, 이 소설로 작가로서 위상을 확립했다. 그 외에도 대표작으로 《과자와 맥주》, 《극장》, 《면도날》 등과 단편집 《나뭇잎의 하늘거림》, 희곡 〈프레더릭 부인〉, 〈순환〉 등이 있다.
Nicholas Shakespeare()
영국의 소설가이자 전기 작가이다. 1957년 외교관의 아들로 태어나 극동과 남미에서 어린 시절을 보냈다. BBC와 The Times에서 편집자로 근무했으며 그의 소설들은 20개 언어로 번역되었다. <The Men Who Would Be King: A Look at Royalty in Exile(1984)>, Betty Trask 수상작인 <The Vision of Elena Silves(1989)>, <The High Flyer (Harvill, 1993)>, 미 도서관 연맹 수상작인 <The Dancer Upstairs (Harvill, 1995)>, <Bruce Chatwin(1999)>, Dublin IMPAC 수상작 <Snowleg(2004)>, <In Tasmania(2004)>등등 다수의 소설과 전기물들을 발표하였다.
