뮤지코필리아Musicophilia란?
Music(음악)과 Philia(사랑)의 합성어.
올리버 색스는 인간 본성 속에 깊숙이 자리 잡고 있는 음악적 성향을 선천적인 것으로 여겼다. E.O.윌슨이 살아 있는 것들에 대한 우리의 감정인 ‘생명사랑biophilia’을 선천적인 것으로 간주했듯이, 음악도 거의 생명체처럼 느껴지므로 인간의 ‘음악사랑’ 또한 ‘생명사랑’의 한 형태로 보는 것이다.

《뮤지코필리아》는 올리버 색스 박사가 병원에서 근무하며 직접 만나고 관찰한 환자들의 사례와 “디어 애비Dear Abby” 코너에 칼럼을 쓴 뒤로 받은 편지 사연을 바탕으로 해서 씌어졌다. 그리고 아직은 밝혀야 할 것들이 많이 남아 있는 분야이긴 하지만 뇌와 음악의 상관관계를 연구한 다양하고 선구적인 자료들이 많이 소개되어 있다. 물론 뇌, 신경 기제, 신경 과학, 생리학 등의 딱딱한 이야기를 대중의 눈높이에 맞춰 이해하기 쉽고 흥미롭게 풀어내주는 색스 박사의 글 솜씨는 이 책에서도 변함없이 발휘된다.
그는 예전부터 음악과 뇌의 관계를 밝히고 싶었지만 이와 관련된 연구를 하기도 쉽지 않았고 관련 서적을 구하기도 어려웠다고 한다. 그 이유는 의사들 자체가 환자들의 음악 인식에 대해 관심이 없었다는 것과 또 하나는 추정으로만 존재하는 메커니즘을 밝힐 도구가 발달하지 않았다는 것이다. 하지만 지난 20년 동안 새로운 과학 기술의 발달(MRI, 기능성 MRI 등)로 우리가 음악을 듣고 상상할 때는 물론 심지어 작곡을 할 때 뇌가 어떻게 반응하는지를 실제로 볼 수 있게 되면서 모든 것이 바뀌었다. 음악적 인식이나 상상과 관련해서 자주 발생하는 복잡하고 기괴한 장애들에 관해 엄청난 연구 결과와 관련 서적들이 나오고 있다. 하지만 색스 박사는 과학적인 방법에만 경도되어 환자를 단지 임상실험의 도구로만 전락시키는 위험에 대해 경고한다. 그는 두 가지 접근 방법 즉 최신 기술을 이용한 접근법과 개개인의 환자가 가진 사례의 풍요로움, 그들의 사연과 경험에 귀를 기울이고 상상하면서 그 속으로 함께 들어가는 방법을 접목하는 길을 택했다. 올리버 색스는 이것이《뮤지코필리아》의 핵심을 이루고 있다고 밝힌다.
