스티븐 호킹은 아인슈타인 이래 가장 뛰어난 이론물리학자 중 한 명으로 추앙받고 있다. 1963년 21세의 호킹은 케임브리지 대학원생이었을 때 운동신경세포 질환에 걸려 2년 더 살 수 있다는 판정을 받았다. 하지만 계속 살아남아 위대한 과학자가 되었고 곤빌 앤 카이우스 칼리지의 전문연구원이 되었다. 그리고 1633년 아이작 뉴턴이 임명되었던 수학 및 이론물리학의 루카스 석좌교수직에 30년 동안 임명되었다. 호킹 교수는 케임브리지대학의 이론 우주론 연구센터 소장을 맡고 있다가 2018년 3월 14일 76세의 나이로 별세했다. 그는 10여 개가 넘는 명예학위를 받았고, 1989년 명예훈작을 받았다. 영국 왕립학회 회원이며 미국 국립과학 아카데미 회원이다. 지은 책으로 『시간의 역사』, 『블랙홀과 아기 우주』, 『호두껍질 속의 우주』, 『위대한 설계』 등이 있다.
