Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him. The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it a coloured poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted imply an enormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. On each landing, opposite the lift-shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.

영국의 작가·저널리스트. 본명은 에릭 아서 블레어(Eric Arthur Blair). 1903년 6월 25일, 인도 아편국 관리였던 아버지의 근무지인 인도 북동부 모티하리에서 태어났다. 첫돌을 맞기 전 영국으로 돌아와 “하급 상류 중산층”으로 명문 기숙학교인 세인트 시프리언스와 이튼을 졸업한 뒤 명문 대학에 진학하는 대신 식민지 버마로 건너가 영국의 경찰간부로 일한다. “고약한 양심의 가책” 때문에 경찰직을 사직한 뒤, 자발적으로 파리와 런던에서 부랑자 생활을 하고 그 체험을 바탕으로 『파리와 런던의 밑바닥 생활』(1933)을 발표한다. 1936년은 오웰에게 중요한 의미를 지닌 해이다. 그해 잉글랜드 북부 탄광촌을 취재하여 탄광 노동자의 생활과 삶의 조건 등을 담은 『위건 부두로 가는 길』(1937)을 쓰고, 이 책의 원고를 출판사에 넘겨주자마자 “파시즘에 맞서” 싸우기 위해 스페인내전에 참전하여 『카탈로니아 찬가』(1938)를 펴내면서 자신의 예술적·정치적 입장을 정리해나간다. 그러한 전환점 이후 폐렴 요양차 모로코에 가서 『숨 쉬러 나가다』(1939)를 쓴다. 2차세계대전 중에는 BBC 라디오 프로듀서로 일했고 이후 <트리뷴>의 문예 편집장, <옵저버>의 전쟁 특파원 노릇도 한다. 1945년에는 전 세계적인 반향을 불러일으킨 정치 우화 『동물농장』을 출간한다. 또 다른 대표작 『1984』(1949) 집필 중 폐결핵 판정을 받은 그는 1950년 1월 21일, 마흔여섯 나이로 숨을 거둔다. 『위건 부두로 가는 길』은 오웰이 작가로서 어느 정도 인정을 받은 뒤 한 진보단체로부터 잉글랜드 북부 노동자들의 실상을 취재하여 글을 써달라는 제의를 받고, 두 달 동안 랭커셔와 요크셔 일대 탄광 지대에서 광부의 집이나 노동자들이 묵는 싸구려 하숙집에 머물며 면밀한 조사활동을 벌인 결과물이다. “실업을 다룬 세미다큐멘터리의 위대한 고전”으로 평가받는다.
