책소개
총 5권으로 이루어진 한국 전통 건축 분야 중 두 번째로 창과 창살문 등의 요소를 살펴보고 있다. 꽃살로 대표되는 불교 건축의 창살과 기하 문양으로 대표되는 유교 건축의 창살의 조형적 의미, 한옥의 창이 갖는 구성 형식과 추상미, 한국 전통 건축에서 문이 갖는 기능적 의미와 문과 길의 형이상학적 관계등을 살펴본다. '우리 문화의 뿌리를 찾아서' 시리즈의 영역본이다.
The book discusses some important aspects in the traditional Korean architecture; various shapes of windows, lattice and doors, among others. The author explains two distinctly different patterns of lattice, the floral lattice, which represents Buddhist architecture, and the geometric lattice that adorns most Confucian architecture, and reflects upon their formal characteristics.
Further, he examines various shapes of windows and elaborates on their abstract beauty and explores the functional significance the door has in the traditional Korean architecture. Underlying all these varying patterns and shapes, the author suggests, is a tangible connection between buildings and philosophy.

저자소개
임석재(지은이)
건축가이자 건축사학자. 이화여자대학교 건축학과 교수로, 주 전공은 건축 역사와 건축 이론이다. 서울대학교 건축학과를 졸업하고, 미국 미시간대학교에서 건축학 석사학위를, 펜실베이니아대학교에서 건축학 박사학위를 받았다. 특유의 사고력과 통찰력으로 동양과 서양, 고대와 현대, 분야와 소재를 넘나들며 건축을 주제로 한 폭넓고 깊이 있는 연구 및 설계 활동을 이어 오고 있다. 1994년 ‘이화여대 건축학과 1호 교수’로 부임해 20년 넘게 강단에 서고 있으며, JTBC 〈차이나는 클라스〉, tvN 〈벌거벗은 세계사〉 등 TV 강연을 비롯한 다수의 대중 교양 강의를 통해 건축학의 대중화에도 힘쓰고 있다. 2019년에는 ‘건축으로 읽는 사회문화사’ 강의로 K-MOOC 블루리본(최우수강좌)과 우수강좌에도 선정되었다. 『한 권으로 읽는 임석재의 서양건축사』 『미국 건축사』 『파리 도시건축의 역사』 『서울 건축사』 등 65권 이상의 저서를 출간했다.
