메리 레놀트(지은이)
영국 태생의 작가이자 역사학자. 옥스퍼드 대학 최초의 여성 입학생이었다. 사학을 전공하고는 작가로서의 경험을 쌓기 위해 학위를 포기하고, 2차대전에 참전하기도 했다. 초기작품 <밤으로의 회귀(Return to Night)>로 MGM상을 수상했다. 그러나 고국에서의 안정된 생활을 버리고 남아프리카 공화국으로 이주해 반(反)아파르트헤이드 운동의 최전선에 서있던 여성운동그룹 'Black Sash'에 참여하며, 혁명적인 여성활동가로 활동했다. 이후 저술활동에 전념하면서 옛 그리스를 배경으로 한 일련의 소설 작품을 썼다. 'Fire from Heaven' 시리즈인 이른바 '알렉산드로스(알렉산더대왕) 3부작'을 비롯하여 <The Last of the Wine> <THe King must die> 등 일련의 베스트셀러를 통하여 고대 그리스의 남성적 세계를 섬세한 질감으로 그려냈다.
