루이스 월퍼트(지은이)
런던대학교University college London 생물학과 명예교수이다. 영국의 저명한 과학자이며, 발생생물학과 응용의학 분야의 최고 권위자로 손꼽힌다. 과학해설자로 수많은 라디오 프로그램에 출연해왔으며, 다른 과학자들과 함께 출연한 대담 프로그램과 1999년 출연한 BBC의 우울증 시리즈 프로그램을 통해 명성을 얻게 되었다. 왕립자연과학회Royal Society 회원으로 상급훈사훈장CBE을 받았고, 과학기술대중화위원회의 의장직을 4년 동안 수행하기도 했다. 저서로는 《과학의 정열 A Passion for Science》,《열정의 마음 Passionate Minds》(공저), 《하나의 세포가 어떻게 인간이 되는가 The Triumph of the Embryo》, 《과학의 비자연적 본질 The Unnatural Nature of Science》, 《우울증에 관한 희망 보고서 Malignant Sadness》, 《우리는 어떻게 살고 죽는가 How We Live and Why We Die》 등이 있다. 특히 《우울증에 관한 희망 보고서》는 “우울증을 가장 객관적이고 간결하게 설명한 뛰어난 책”이라는 극찬을 받으며 여러 번 재출간되었다.
