In the 1960s, "Freddie's" was the common name for the Temple Stage School, which supplied London's West End theaters with children for roles in everything from Shakespeare to musicals to the Christmas pantomime. Freddie, the proprietress, is a formidable woman of unknown age and murky background who brings everyone she meets under her spell - so common an occurrence, it is known as "being Freddied."At Freddie's we meet any and all theatrical types, including dour Pierce and enchanting Hannah, two teachers whose love affair falters when Hannah falls for an amiable drunken actor; Jonathan, a nine-year old actor of great promise, and his slick rival Mattie; and Joey Blatt, who devises wicked plans to rescue Freddie's from insolvency. The story of what happens "at Freddie's" is, in the end, for those of us who sometimes pretend to be what we are not - which is to say, act a little.

피넬로피 피츠제럴드(지은이)
1916년 12월 영국 잉글랜드 동부의 링컨에서 태어났다. 1939년 옥스퍼드 대학 서머빌 칼리지 졸업 후 식량부와 BBC 방송국 등에서 일했다. 1941년 결혼한 뒤 잡지 편집, 서점 운영, 연극 학교 교사 등을 전전하다가 병석에 누운 남편을 위로하기 위해 소설을 쓰기 시작, 1977년 61세의 나이로 첫 소설 『황금 아이 Golden Child』를 출간했다. 2000년 4월 28일, 83세를 일기로 세상을 떠날 때까지 9편의 장편소설을 썼다. 이 가운데 『북샵』을 비롯해 3편의 작품이 영국의 가장 권위 있는 문학상인 맨부커상 후보에 올랐고, 1979년에는 『오프쇼어 Offshore』로 맨부커상을 수상하는 영예를 안았다. 1997년에는 『푸른 꽃 The Blue Flower』으로 전미비평가협회상을, 1999년에는 평생에 걸쳐 문학 발전에 공헌한 점을 인정받아 영국 펜클럽에서 골든펜 어워드를 받았다. 2008년에는 「타임스」의 ‘1945년 이후 가장 위대한 영국 작가 50인’에 선정되었다.
