It's Malaya, 1949. There she discovers Yugiri, the only Japanese garden in Malaya, and its owner and creator, the enigmatic Aritomo, exiled former gardener of the Emperor of Japan. Despite her hatred of the Japanese, Yun Ling seeks to engage Aritomo to create a garden in Kuala Lumpur, in memory of her sister who died in the camp. Aritomo refuses, but agrees to accept Yun Ling as his apprentice 'until the monsoon comes'. Then she can design a garden for herself.? As the months pass, Yun Ling finds herself intimately drawn to her sensei and his art while, outside the garden, the threat of murder and kidnapping from the guerrillas of the jungle hinterland increases with each passing day. 1972년 페낭에서 태어나서 말레이시아의 여러 지역에서 성장했다. 런던대학교 법학과를 졸업하고 지적재산권 변호사로 활동했다. 어린 시절 합기도에 심취해서 삶의 모든 부분에 합기도 원칙이 배어 있다. 합기도 1단 유단자이며 문화유산 건축물 보존의 열렬한 옹호자이기도 하다. 작가의 첫 소설 『비의 선물 The Gift of Rain』은 2007년 맨부커상 예심에 올라 여러 나라에서 번역되었다. 두 번째 소설 『해 질 무렵 안개 정원 The Garden of Evening Mists』은 2012년 맨부커상 결선에 진출했고, 맨아시아 문학상과 월터 스코트 역사소설상을 수상하였다. 이 두 작품은 사람들에게 잊힌 격동의 역사를 다룬 강력한 소설이라는 공통점이 있다. 『해 질 무렵 안개 정원』은 유려한 미스터리와 조용하지만 힘 있는 서사를 펼쳤다는 평가를 받는다. 작가는 남아프리카공화국 케이프타운과 말레이시아 쿠알라룸푸르를 오가며 살고 있다.
