Then one morning Rasa's grandmother, the woman who raised him, catches them in bed together. The following day?the day leading up to Taymour’s wedding?Rasa is consumed by the search for his best friend Maj, a fiery activist and drag queen star of the underground bar, Guapa, who has been arrested by the police. Ashamed to go home and face his grandmother, and reeling from the potential loss of the three most important people in his life, he roams the city’s slums and prisons, the lavish weddings of the country’s elite, and the bars where outcasts and intellectuals drink to a long-lost revolution. Each new encounter leads him closer to confronting his own identity, as he revisits his childhood and probes the secrets that haunt his family. As Rasa confronts the simultaneous collapse of political hope and his closest personal relationships, he is forced to discover the roots of his alienation and try to re-emerge into a society that may never accept him.

이라크계 독일 어머니와 팔레스타인계 레바논 아버지 사이에서 태어났다. 쿠웨이트에서 태어나 요르단과 사이프러스, 캐나다, 영국에서 생활했으며, 국경없는 의사회 및 여러 국제 단체들과 함께 예멘, 시리아, 이라크, 리비아, 레바논, 이집트 등에서 일해 왔다. 그 자신이 활동가로서 중동과 북아프리카의 다양한 문화적, 사회적, 정치적 지점들에 대해 고민하고 있으며, 구아파는 그의 첫 소설이자 자서전적인 소설이다.
