Christopher Heywood invites us to take a fresh look at this oft-interpreted novel, throwing new light on its literary ancestry, and providing a wealth of material about the 'plantation economy' of northern England in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. 『제인 에어』를 쓴 언니 샬럿, 『애그니스 그레이』를 쓴 동생 앤과 함께 영문학사에 뚜렷한 족적을 남긴 〈브론테 자매〉 중 한 명이다. 에밀리 브론테는 1818년 잉글랜드 북부에 위치한 요크셔 근교 손턴이라는 시골 마을에서 1남 5녀 중 4녀로 태어났다. 1821년 어머니를 암으로 잃고 영국 국교회 신부인 아버지의 슬하에서 자라다 1824년 세 언니가 다니던 기숙 학교에 입학한다. 그러나 열악한 학교 환경으로 인해 언니 둘이 결핵으로 사망하면서 반년 만에 자퇴하고, 그때부터 가정 내에서 아버지에게 직접 교육을 받는 한편, 스콧, 바이런, 셸리의 문학 작품을 읽으며 홀로 교양을 쌓는다. 성인이 된 후 잠시 샬럿이 교사로 있던 학교에 입학하기도 하고 외지에서 교사 생활을 하기도 하지만 모두 길게 이어지지는 않았으며, 평생 대부분의 시간을 아버지의 사제관에서 살림을 돌보며 독학으로 공부한다. 1846년 샬럿, 앤과 함께 시집 『커러, 엘리스, 액턴 벨의 시』를 성별이 모호한 필명으로 공동 출간하나 거의 판매되지 않는다. 다음 해인 1847년 샬럿의 『제인 에어』, 에밀리의 『폭풍의 언덕』, 앤의 『애그니스 그레이』가 차례로 출간된다. 언니의 『제인 에어』가 즉각적인 성공을 거둔 데 비해 『폭풍의 언덕』은 바로 주목받지 못하고 1848년 에밀리가 폐결핵으로 사망한 후 반세기가 지나서야 비로소 위대한 명작으로 인정받는다. 『폭풍의 언덕』은 잉글랜드 북부 황량한 들판을 배경으로 거칠고도 격렬한 영혼을 지닌 이들이 두 세대에 걸쳐 펼치는 사랑과 배신, 복수 그리고 구원에 관한 이야기다. 셰익스피어의 『리어왕』, 허먼 멜빌의 『모비 딕』과 함께 영문학 3대 비극으로 꼽히며, 현대에도 생생하게 살아 숨 쉬는 이야기로서 영화나 연극, 음악 등으로 끊임없이 변주되고 재해석되는 불후의 걸작이다.
