리차드 세넷(지은이)
노동 및 도시 연구의 세계적 권위자이자 미국의 손꼽히는 좌파 지식인. 1943년에 태어나 어머니와 함께 흑인과 가난한 백인이 주로 거주하던 시카고의 공공 주택 카브리니 그린에서 성장기를 보냈다. 시카고대학교를 거쳐 하버드대학교에서 《고독한 군중》을 집필한 데이비드 리스먼 등에게 수학했고, 한나 아렌트와는 독립적인 교류를 이어갔다. 졸업 후 수전 손택 등과 함께 뉴욕 인문학 연구소를 창립하고 예일대학교, 뉴욕대학교, 런던정치경제대학교 등에서 학생을 가르쳤다. 미국 노동 위원회 의장을 역임하고 유엔 산하 기구에서 일하는 등 학문 영역 외에서도 왕성한 활동을 이어왔다. 헤겔상(2006), 스피노자상(2010), 대영 제국 훈장(2018) 등을 받았고, 현재는 컬럼비아대학교 부설 자본주의와 사회 센터의 선임 연구원이자 MIT 도시학 초빙 교수를 맡고 있다. 세넷은 여러 분야에 걸쳐 다양한 책을 남겼다. 노동 사회학 분야에서는 《계급의 숨은 상처》, 《신자유주의와 인간성 파괴》, 《불평등 사회의 인간 존중》, 《새로운 자본주의의 문화》, 도시 사회학 분야에서는 《무질서의 효용》, 《살과 돌》 등의 책을 썼다. 삶을 만들어가는 존재로서 인간의 역량에 주목한 호모 파베르 3부작 《장인》, 《투게더》, 《짓기와 거주하기》 등의 책을 집필하기도 했다. 세넷의 책 대부분은 동시대의 고전으로 평가받으며 전 세계에서 널리 읽히고 있다.
