1944년 미국 조지아주 이턴턴에서 소작농 부부의 여덟째 아이로 태어났다. 1961년 애틀랜타의 스펠먼대학교에 입학했고, 역사가이자 사회운동가인 하워드 진과 스토턴 린드의 영향을 받아 흑인민권운동에 관심을 갖기 시작했다. 이 년 뒤 뉴욕의 세라로런스대학교로 편입했으며, 졸업 후 인권운동을 위해 남부로 귀향했다. 1968년 첫 시집 『한때』를 발표하고 1970년 첫 장편소설 『그레인지 코플랜드의 세번째 인생』을 출간했다. 웰즐리대학교와 매사추세츠대학교 등 여러 대학에서 문학을 강의했으며, 단편집 『사랑과 고통』, 시집 『혁명하는 피튜니아』, 장편소설 『머리디언』 등의 작품을 선보였다. 1980년대에는 여성주의 저널 『미즈』의 편집인으로 활동했다. 1982년 『컬러 퍼플』을 출간해 이듬해 미국도서상과 흑인 여성 최초로 퓰리처상을 수상하며 세계적인 작가로 발돋움했다. 미국 현대문학을 대표하는 작가이자 열정적인 사회운동가로서 다양한 분야에 목소리를 내며 왕성한 창작활동을 이어가고 있다.
