There is a breed of computer simulations, known as "artificial worlds" or "would-be-worlds", that allows scientists to create artificial versions of real-life phenomena inside their computers. This work describes how far these simulations have come and how they are being used as problem solvers, predictors, and simulated scientific experiments. These "would-be-worlds" have already tackled many real-life problems. Urban planners have used one to study traffic flows. Meteorologists use simulations to predict blizzards with incredible accuracy. And scientists are even using these powerful models to study how the brain works.

미국 서던캘리포니아대학교에서 수학 박사학위를 받았다. 랜드연구소(RAND Corporation)와 산타페연구소(Santa Fe Institute), 국제응용시스템분석연구소(International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, IIASA)에서 일했다. 2005년에 복잡성 과학을 적용해 기존의 통계적 방식보다 훨씬 정교하게 미래를 예측하는 미래탐구학회 케노스서클(Kenos Circle)을 공동 설립했다. 프린스턴대학교, 뉴욕대학교 등에서 교수직을 역임했고 학술지 《복잡성(Complexity)》의 편집자로도 활동했다. 현재 IIASA의 선임연구원으로 있으면서 일본, 핀란드 등에서 국가적 차원의 X이벤트의 예측과 대처를 위한 컨설팅에 참여하고 있다. 사회 분위기가 사회적 사건에 미치는 영향을 탐구한 『대중의 직관』을 비롯해 응용 수학과 모델링에 관한 전문서를 20여 권 출간했다. 1989년에 출간한 『뒤바뀐 현실: 자연과 인간에 관한 수학적 모델(Alternate Realities: Mathematical Models of Nature and Man』은 미국출판인협회에서 자연과학 분야 최고의 학술서로 선정되었다. 대중 과학서로는 『(20세기 수학의) 다섯 가지 황금률』(1995), 『케임브리지 5중주(Cambridge Quintet)』(1998), 『괴델』(2003) 등을 발표한 베스트셀러 작가이자 SF 소설가이기도 하다. 이 책 『X이벤트』는 전작 『대중의 직관』에 이어 사회적 사건과 그 발생 원인, 그로 인한 결과를 다룬 삼부작 중 두 번째 책으로, 자연이 아닌, 인간에 의해 발생하는 극단적인 사건의 원인과 그 대책에 초점을 맞추고 있다.
