The author of Violence and the Sacred looks at the gospels as a map of human behavior and sees striking parallels with modern human behavior. Original.
Rene Girard holds up the gospels as mirrors that reveal our broken humanity, and shows that they also reflect a new reality that can make us whole. Like Simone Weil, Girard looks at the Bible as a map of human behavior, and sees Jesus Christ as the turning point leading to new life.
The title echoes Jesus' words: "I saw Satan falling like lightning from heaven". Girard persuades us that even as our world grows increasingly violent the power of the Christ-event is so great that the evils of scapegoating and sacrifice are being defeated even now. A new community, God's nonviolent kingdom, is being realized -- even now.

문학평론가이자 사회인류학자인 르네 지라르는 1923년 남프랑스 아비뇽에서 태어나 1947년 파리 고문서학교를 졸업하고, 미국 인디애나대학에서 역사학을 전공했다. 인디애나대학 프랑스어 강사를 시작으로 듀크대학·존스 홉킨스대학·뉴욕주립대학·스탠퍼드대학 등에서 정교수와 석좌교수 등을 지내며 프랑스의 역사·문화·문학·사상에 관한 강의를 했다. 이런 이유로 그는 프랑스보다 미국에서 더 널리 알려져 있고, 그의 이론과 사상은 미국 대학에서 더 많이 논의되고 있다. 이밖에도 그는 1947년 제르보·샤르피에 등과 함께 아비뇽 교황청에서 ‘현대 회화전’을 개최해 브라크·샤갈·칸딘스키·클레·레제·마티스·몬드리안·피카소 등의 작품을 전시하는 등 많은 화가와 작품에 관심을 가졌다. 1961년에는 존스 홉킨스대학에서 ‘비평언어와 인문학’에 관한 국제 심포지엄을 개최했는데, 여기에는 바르트·데리다·골드만·이폴리트·라캉·풀레·토도로프·베르낭 등 많은 학자가 참가했다. 지라르의 관심은 소설 속의 인물들을 통해 인간 욕망의 구조를 밝혀내는 데서 출발한다. 그것이 그의 첫 저서인 『낭만적 거짓과 소설적 진실』에서 다루고 있는 내용이다. 그 작업의 결실인 『폭력과 성스러움』은 1973년 프랑스 아카데미상을 받았다. 그밖에도 『지하실의 비평』 『세상이 만들어질 때부터 숨겨져온 것』 『이중규제』 『희생양』 『나는 사탄이 번개처럼 떨어지는 것을 본다』 등 많은 작품을 발표했는데, 대부분 문학 작품 분석이 중심을 이루고 있으며 특히 폭력과 구원에 관한 주제가 많은 비중을 차지한다.
