어니스트 하워드 쉐퍼드(지은이)
영국의 예술가이자 삽화가. 건축가인 헨리 돈킨 셰퍼드와 수채화가인 윌리엄 리의 딸 제시 해리엇의 아들로 태어났다. 부모에게서 예술적 소양을 물려받아 어려서부터 그림에 재능을 보였고, 어머니의 적극적인 장려 덕분에 재능을 꽃피울 수 있었다. 해머스미스에 살기 시작하면서 삼촌이 교장으로 있던 세인트 폴 스쿨을 다녔는데, 이곳에서 그의 재능을 알아본 선생님들의 격려에 힘입어 헤더리 미술학교에 입학했다. 이후 왕립 미술 아카데미 학교에 장학생으로 진학했다. 셰퍼드는 처음에 주로 유화를 그렸으나 스스로 재능이 없다고 생각해서 왕립 미술 아카데미 학교 졸업 이후에는 삽화가로서 활동에 전념한다. 영국의 유머 잡지 『펀치』에 정기적으로 그림을 기고했고, 틈틈이 찰스 디킨스의 『데이비드 코퍼필드』, 『이솝 우화』 등의 삽화 작업을 하면서 경력을 쌓았다. 이후 『펀치』에 실린 앨런 알렉산더 밀른의 시 11편에 삽화를 그린 인연이 훗날 ‘곰돌이 푸’로 이어졌다. 셰퍼드는 사망하기 직전까지 왕성하게 활동했고, 삽화가로서 업적을 인정받아 1972년에 대영 제국 훈장을 받았다. 1976년, 곰돌이 푸가 탄생한 지 50년이 되는 해에 96세의 나이로 눈을 감았다.
