영국의 베스트셀러 작가. 문학적 필치로 역사를 서술하는 역사가로 유명하다. 전혀 허구를 동원하지 않음에도 불구하고 역사 속에서 가장 드라마틱한 부분을 특유의 위트로 이끌어내어 마치 소설 속의 한 장면처럼 역사를 재구성한다. 17세기 암스테르담 상인의 이야기를 쓴 《혼돈의 방(Drowning Room)》과 2차 세계대전 당시 유태인 가족 이야기를 다룬 《베를린에서 온 물건들(The Pieces from Berlin)》은 모두 뉴욕타임스 올해의 책으로 선정되었다. 이외에도 근대사 관련 저술들로 많은 상을 받았으며, 런던과 뉴욕에서 저널리스트로 활동했다. 2016년 현재 런던과 포르투갈 시골을 오가며 저술 활동을 하고 있다.
