칼릴 지브란(지은이)
1883년 레바논 북부 지방의 작은 마을 베샤르에서 태어났다. 그는 레바논의 대표 작가로 철학가·화가·소설가·시인으로 활동했다. 1895년 세무 관리를 담당했던 아버지의 업무상 실수로 재산을 몰수당하고, 아버지를 제외한 가족 전부가 미국으로 이민을 갔다. 1989년 고향으로 돌아와 아랍 문학을 공부했다. 1902년 고향에서 공부를 마치고 미국으로 돌아가던 중, 보스턴에 있던 누이동생 술타나의 사망 소식을 들었다. 이후 1903년에는 형 부트로스와 어머니가 사망했다. 가족들의 잇단 죽음을 겪은 지브란은 그림 및 저작 활동에 몰두했다. 1908년 파리에서 그림을 공부하며 아랍 어로 쓴 《반항하는 영혼》을 출간했다. 1914년 뉴욕 몽트로스 갤러리에서 전시회를 열어 언론의 호평과 혹평을 동시에 받으며, 1917년 뉴욕 노들러 갤러리에서 연 전시회를 통해 화가로서 인정받기 시작했다. 1918년 35세에 비로소 영어로 쓴 첫 작품 《광인》을 출간했다. 그의 나이 40세가 되던 1923년에 《예언자》를 출간했다. 1930년 그의 생전에 나온 마지막 책 《지상의 신들》을 출간했다. 1931년 4월 10일 뉴욕에서 결핵과 간경화증 악화로 48세의 젊은 나이로 사망했다.
