This novel centres around eight hours in the life of the Author (unnamed), a man in his forties, a literary celebrity, who is in Tel Aviv on a stifling hot night to give a reading. Bored, he looks for distraction - and finds copy. In his head he conjures up the life stories of the people he meets, not least Ricky, an equally bored but seductive waitress. Later, even as the reading from his new book is underway, and the obligatory inane questions have come and gone ('Why do you write?' 'What is it like to be famous?' 'Do you write with a pen or on a computer?'), he weaves stories round the audience and the panel.
Afterwards, the Author invites the professional reader who took part for a drink before walking her home; but she lives opposite and declines, and he wanders off into the dark. Later he returns, climbs the many flights of stairs to her flat, where she lives alone with her cat ... Or does he? The reader never quite knows where reality ends and invention begins in this Author's account of his long night.
He spends the rest of the night wandering, smoking, inventing, regretting and thinking till dawn, when he learns, by chance, of the death of a once famous poet, now barely remembered.

1939년 이스라엘 예루살렘에서 태어났다. 본명은 아모스 클라우스너이다. 열다섯 살 때 집을 나와 키부츠에서 생활하며 중등 교육을 마쳤고, 이때 히브리어로 ‘힘’을 뜻하는 ‘오즈’로 개명하며 키부츠 소식지와 신문 등에 글을 쓰기 시작했다. 예루살렘 히브리 대학교에서 히브리 문학과 철학을 공부하고, 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 문학을 공부했다. 1965년 발표한 단편집 『자칼의 울음소리』로 홀론 상을 수상했다. 1967년 참가한 6일 전쟁과 시나이 전투에서 전쟁의 참혹함을 목격했다. 전쟁 직후인 1968년 발표한 『나의 미카엘』은 남녀 간의 사랑, 이상과 현실의 간극으로 방황하는 인간상을 절묘하게 담아낸 수작이다. 전 세계 29개 언어로 출간된 이 책으로 그는 현대 히브리 문학을 대표하는 작가로 인정받았다. 1987년부터 2005년까지 이스라엘 브엘세바의 벤구리온 대학교에서 히브리 문학 교수로 재직했고 1997년 프랑스에서 레지옹 도뇌르 훈장을, 1998년 이스라엘 최고의 영예인 이스라엘 문학상을 수상했다. 그 밖에 괴테 상(2005), 프리모 레비 상(2008), 프란츠 카프카 상(2013), 박경리 문학상(2015), 스티그 다게르만 상(2018) 등 전 세계 유수의 문학상을 수상했다. 작품으로 『블랙박스』(1987), 『여자를 안다는 것』(1989), 『사랑과 어둠의 이야기』(2002), 『삶과 죽음의 시』(2007), 『유다』(2014) 등이 있다. 2018년 일흔아홉 살의 나이에 별세하여 키부츠 훌다에 묻혔다.
