1976년 스코틀랜드 던디에서 태어나 독일 베를린과 영국 바스 등에서 유년 시절을 보냈다. 열다섯 살 때 즐겨 읽던 비디오게임 잡지 <세가 파워>의 사무실에 무작정 찾아가 잡일을 거들다, 어느 날 병가를 낸 기자 대신 게임 리뷰를 쓰면서 칼럼니스트로서 이른 경력을 시작했다. 어린 시절부터 쌓아온 게임, 방송, 음악, 영화 등 다양한 대중문화에 대한 폭넓은 관심과 애정, 잡지사에서의 경험은 그의 장편소설 데뷔작 『샬럿 스트리트』(2012)에도 고스란히 녹아 있다. 1996년 대학 교육을 위해 런던에 온 이래 지금까지 런던에서 살고 있다. 웨스트민스터 대학교에서 미디어 연구 과정을 이수하고, 1999년 스물두 살의 나이로 BBC에 사상 최연소 프로듀서로 입사하며 어릴 적 꿈을 이뤘다. 라디오 코미디 쇼 <마이티 부시>부터 자신의 작은 아파트를 ‘러블리 왕국’으로 선포하는 과정을 담은 TV 다큐멘터리 <내 국가를 세우는 법>까지, 재기발랄하고 기상천외한 아디이어를 과감하게 실행에 옮기는 데 천재적인 재능을 발휘하며 영국 대중문화계의 스타이자 괴짜로 떠올랐다. 그가 실제로 육 개월 동안 무조건 “예스”만 하고 산 경험을 기록한 에세이 『예스 맨』 (2005)은 영국 베스트셀러에 올랐고, 짐 캐리 주연의 할리우드 영화로 제작되어 그의 이름을 더욱 널리 알리는 계기가 되었다. 그 밖의 저서로 『나와 함께해요』(2003), 『서른 살의 인생 여행』(2008), 두번째 소설 『톰 디토가 누구지?』(2014) 등이 있다. <가디언> <인디펜던트> <코즈모폴리턴> <GQ> <엘르> 등 각종 매체에 칼럼을 기고하며 프로듀서, 방송 진행자, 극작가 등 다양한 분야에서 왕성하게 활동하고 있다.
