| 520 | 8 | ▼a Sculptures of angels and saints, not gargoyles, adorn St. Isaac Cathedral in St. Petersburg. This immense building, designed by architect Auguste de Montferrand in 1818, took over 40 years to build and is one of the largest cathedrals in the world, able to accommodate 14,000 standing worshipers. Building on this site had always been an issue because the ground was a marsh, so in order to support the 300,000-ton weight of this new cathedral, 11,000 wooden piles were sunk so as to secure a strong foundation. Montferrand designed the cathedral in the classical style, with giant pink columns and a 325 foot tall dome, which is covered with 200 pounds of gold leaf. Today, like many of the large Russian cathedrals, St. Isaac functions in part as a museum and is a huge tourist destination. |
| 520 | 8 | ▼a During the Soviet period, St. Isaac's was turned into a Museum of Atheism- one can discuss the history of these monumental buildings. This photo can also be used to start discussion on the functionality of large cathedrals- why do students think these buildings were constructed? Do they serve better as landmarks and displays of wealth rather than as places of worship? Who attended this church when it was fully functional? Were they centers of activity, both religious and non-religious? Why do you think so many cathedrals are now at least part-time museums? This would be a great building to do a research project on. |
