마누엘 데란다(지은이)
1952년 멕시코에서 출생했고, 1975년 이후로 미국에 거주하고 있다. 1979년 School of Visual Arts에서 미술학사 학위를 받았고, 2010년 European Graduate School에서 미디어와 커뮤니케이션 전공으로 박사 학위를 받았으며, 그곳에서 들뢰즈 철학 석좌교수를 역임하고 있다. 프린스턴과 펜실베이니아 대학에서 도시 설계와 건축학에 관한 강의도 하고 있다. 그는 1970년대 말부터 뉴욕에서 실험영화 감독들과 교류하면서 몇 편의 단편 영화를 제작하기도 하였는데, 「Raw Nerves: A Lacanian Thriller」가 제일 알려진 작품이다. 1980년대 중반까지 이어진 영화 이론과 정신분석에 대한 관심은 1991년 출판한 『지능기계 시대의 전쟁』 이후로 명령과 제어 기법, 복잡계와 인공 생명에 대한 유물론적 관심으로 이동했고 현재는 ‘신유물론’의 기수로 평가받는다. 주요 저서로 『지능기계 시대의 전쟁』, 『새로운 사회철학』, 『강도의 과학과 잠재성의 철학: 잠재성에서 현실성으로』 등이 있다.
