더글러스 호프스태터(지은이)
1945년 뉴욕에서 태어났다. 1961년도 노벨 물리학상을 수상한 아버지 로버트 호프스태터의 학문적 재능을 이어받아 일찍이 과학자의 길을 택했다. 1965년 스탠퍼드 대학교를 졸업했고 1975년에는 오리건 대학교에서 물리학 박사 학위를 받았다. 그 후 인디애나 대학교 컴퓨터학과, 미시간 대학교 심리학과에서 인공지능 연구에 몰두했다. 독일 레겐스부르크 대학교, 미국 인디애나 대학교와 MIT 등 여러 대학교에서 객원교수를 역임했다. 현재 인디애나 대학교 인지과학 및 컴퓨터 과학 교수로 재직하고 있으며, 프린스턴 대학교 및 하버드 대학교에서 과학철학, 비교문학 및 심리학 분야의 객원교수로도 활동하고 있다. 한국어로 번역된 저서로는 《괴델, 에셔, 바흐Godel, Escher, Bach(GEB)》가 있다. GEB의 출간으로 1980년 퓰리처 상(일반 논픽션 부문)을 수상했고, 같은 해에 전미(全美) 도서 대상을 석권했다.
