우주론과 천문학을 연구하는 영국의 이론물리학자이자 미국 애리조나주립대학교 비욘드 연구소(Beyond Center)의 소장이다. 존재의 ‘거대한 질문’을 자신의 연구 목표로 삼는 저자는 우주의 기원, 블랙홀의 양자적 상태, 시간의 본질 등과 같은 굵직한 문제를 다뤄왔고 생명의 기원과 본성, 우주생물학으로 관심을 확장시켰다. 최근 생물학과 물리학의 접점에서 ‘생명이란 무엇인가’를 탐구하며 우주론과 생물학을 아우르는 과학의근본 개념을 탐구하고 있다. 1946년 영국 런던에서 태어나 유니버시티 칼리지 런던에서 물리학으로 박사 학위를 받았으며 2006년부터 지금까지 애리조나주립대학교 물리학과 교수로 있다. 채프먼대학교 양자연구소 회원, 애리조나주립대학교 물리과학과 암생물학 융합센터 연구 책임자, 외계생명체에 메시지 보내기(METI) 자문위원 등을 맡고 있다. 과학의 철학적 의미를 연구하여 템플턴상을, 영국 왕립학회가 수여하는 패러데이상을 비롯해 영국 물리학회의 켈빈 메달, 오스트레일리아 훈장 등을 받았다. 그의 공적을 기리는 의미에서 소행성 1992OG에 ‘6870 폴데이비스’라는 공식 명칭이 붙기도 했다. 저서로 《무엇이 우주를 삼키고 있는가》, 《침묵하는 우주》, 《현대 물리학이 발견한 창조주》 등이 있다.
