블라디미르 나보코프(지은이)
1899년 러시아 상트페테르부르크의 귀족 명문가에서 태어났다. 부유하고 문화적으로 풍요롭고 자유주의적인 집안에서 최고의 교육을 받으며 자랐다. 1917년 볼셰비키 혁명 이후 나보코프 가족은 런던을 거쳐 베를린으로 이주했다. 1922년 아버지가 극우파 러시아인의 총에 맞아 살해되자 케임브리지 대학을 졸업한 나보코프는 외국어, 테니스 강습 등으로 가족의 생계를 책임졌다. 1923년부터 러시아어로 장편소설, 단편소설, 희곡, 시, 번역서를 내면서 중요한 러시아 망명 작가 중 하나로 명성을 얻다가 1940년 아내와 아들과 함께 미국으로 이주했다. 미국에 정착한 나보코프는 1941년부터 웰즐리 칼리지에서 강사로 지내다가 1948년 코넬 대학교 러시아문학 교수로 임용되어 1959년까지 재직했다. 1955년 대표작 가운데 하나인 『롤리타』가 출간되었으며, 『프닌』(1957)은 『서배스천 나이트의 진짜 인생』(1941), 『벤드 시니스터』(1947), 『말하라, 기억이여』(1967), 『롤리타』와 함께 미국에서 출간된 작품이다. 1960년 미국을 떠나 스위스로 이주했고 1977년 몽트뢰에서 사망했다. 이 외에도 『창백한 불꽃』(1962), 『아다 혹은 열정: 가족 연대기』(1969), 『어릿광대를 보라!』(1974) 등 다수의 작품을 썼으며 미발표 작품으로 『오리지널 오브 로라』가 있다.
