영국의 세인트올번스에서 성장했고 언어학을 전공했으며 로망스어로 박사학위를 받았다. 1965년 스티븐 호킹과 결혼하여 슬하에 로버트, 루시, 티모시 3남매를 두었으며 성인기 대부분을 케임브리지에 살면서 스티븐과 25년 넘게 결혼생활을 이어갔다. 이 둘은 1990년 결별했으며 5년 후 이혼했다. 1994년 <프랑스 집>을 출판했고 음악가이자 오랜 친구였던 조나단 존스와 재혼한 후, 1999년에는 스티븐과의 결혼생활을 고백한 회상록 <별들을 감동시키는 음악>을 발표했다. 2007년 기존 회상록을 다시 개작한 <사랑에 대한 모든 것>을 출간했다. 이 책의 원제는 “Travelling to Infinity: The True Story behind The Theory of Everything”으로서 영화 <사랑에 대한 모든 것>의 원작이다. 요즘은 현대언어를 가르치고 독창과 합창 활동에도 열심히 참여하며 영국에서 조나단과 함께 조용한 여생을 살아가고 있다.
