1960년 영국 런던의 부유한 상류층 집안에서 태어났다. 다섯 살부터 여덟 살이 될 때까지 아버지로부터 끔찍한 학대를 당해 불우한 어린 시절을 보낸다. 웨스트민스터 사립학교를 거쳐 옥스퍼드 대학에 간 그는 늘 글쓰기를 좋아했으나 약물에 중독되어 피폐한 청년기를 보내고 스물다섯 살에 자살을 시도한다. 그로 인한 치료의 한 방편으로 자신의 이야기를 소설로 쓰기 시작, 그 결실로 『괜찮아』(1992)『나쁜 소식』(1992)『일말의 희망』(1994)『모유』(2005)『마침내』(2012)로 이루어진 「패트릭 멜로즈 소설 5부작」을 써낸다. 자신의 고통스러운 경험을 문학 작품으로 승화시키는 데 무려 20년이 넘는 시간이 걸렸다. 그는 작가로서 현실과 허구의 분리가 불가능한 이 소설 속 불행한 가족에 대해 쓰면서 스스로 해방감과 구원되는 기쁨을 갖는다. 『모유』가 맨부커상 최종심에 오르면서 문단에서 주목받기 시작하여 『괜찮아』는 베티트래스크 문학상을, 『모유』는 페미나상을 수상한다. 그의 다른 작품으로는 『출구에 대한 단서』, 가디언 문학상 최종심에 오른 『끄트머리에서』와 우드하우스상을 받은 『할 말을 잃음』 등이 있다.
