The legacy of Japanese imperialism and the Pacific War had left irremovable, multifaceted scars on the memories and sensibilities of those who had suffered and are still suffering in Asia. For Koreans, Chinese, and many other victimized nations, the narrative must be crystal clear and linear; it must appear to be the stories of Japanese exploitation, abuse, massacres, brutalities, and the ultimate victory of righteousness over evil. History textbooks, mass media, and popular cultures in these countries have repeatedly dictated this type of narrative with almost no rebuttal allowed. On the other side of the coin, however, was depicted a rather unseen, obscure spectrum of stories, ideas, memories, claims, and imaginations that have been inexplicitly taught, shared, recounted, and reproduced in a variety of ways among the people living in the archipelago. These are the stories full of nostalgic yearning for those lost days, remorseful regrets, hushed bitterness, and illusion-provoking inspirations about what their country should have done, what would have remained, and what could have been redeemed during and after such a tempestuous era of world history. For more than 70 years, Japanese outlets such as popular culture and manga have never forgotten this theme.
This book, as a scholarly attempt to reshape the discourse on Japanese imperialism and its defeat, would like to have readers rethink the narrative theme of the most famous Japanese manga ever, Dragon Ball. Hitherto known and comprehended as a fantasy tale whose motif was adopted from the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, Dragon Ball, the authors argue, contains metaphors that allude to memories of the Japanese past during the Pacific War, reflect self-identity construction of the post-war generation, and evoke a die-hard aspiration for Pan-Asianism. This book also strives to redirect readers’ attention from victimized self-image of each Asian nation to their counterpart in the Japanese psyche that reveals an ‘untold’ history of how the Japanese people have remembered, and still try to remember, their past while redeeming their predecessors and themselves. Meanwhile, the authors investigate whether this redeeming gesture apparent in Japanese culture will receive cordial responses from those neighboring nations through a holistic, anthrohistorical approach. Thus, this book evokes both popular and scholarly responses in a very thought-provoking manner.
As rendering this book to not only South Korean readers but also those in Japan, China, and other international reading communities, I wish this fine work would receive both encouraging receptions and critical analysis from a wide range of the reading public. I also send a comforting message to the victims of the ferocious human atrocities committed during WWII. May peace be upon all of them.
