This collection shows Virginia Woolf's genius as a critic and essayist, and offers important insight into her creative mind. Her essays informed her fiction, and vice versa; this volume shows her thinking about the possibility of poeticizing the novel, which ultimately resulted in The Waves. In some of these pieces, she considers the relationship among women, writing, and society u the preoccupation that would become such a large part of her legacy. The Common Reader: Second Series also comprises a significant part of this volume.Stuart N. Clarke, series editor, has transcribed and edited Virginia Wolf's Orlando: The Original Holograph Draft, was cocompiler with B.J. Kirkpatrick of the fourth edition of A Bibliography of Virginia Woolf, and edited Translations from the Russian by Virginia Woolf and S.S. Koteliansky. He is a founding member of the Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain and has edited its journal, the Virginia Woolf Bulletin, since its inception.

1882년 영국 런던에서 당대의 저명한 학자이자 문필가였던 아버지 레슬리 스티븐과 어머니 줄리아 프린셉 덕워스 사이에서 태어났다. 남자 형제들처럼 공식 대학 교육은 받지 못했지만, 어린 시절부터 아버지의 서재에서 많은 책을 탐독하며 시간을 보냈다. 13세가 되던 해인 1895년에 어머니가 세상을 떠나면서 처음으로 신경 쇠약을 앓았고, 1904년 아버지마저 사망하자 재발하여 자살을 기도했다. 이후 화가인 언니 버네사와 함께 블룸즈버리로 이사하여 그곳에서 케임브리지 대학교 출신의 지식인, 예술가 들과 교류하기 시작했다. 울프가 주축이 되어 활동한 이 모임은 훗날 <블룸즈버리 그룹>으로 알려진다. 1912년 그룹의 일원이던 레너드 울프와 결혼했으며, 남편과 함께 호가스 출판사를 차려 T. S. 엘리엇과 E. M. 포스터의 작품 등을 출간했다. 1915년에 첫 소설 『출항』을 발표한 후 『밤과 낮』(1919)을 거쳐 실험적인 성격을 띤 『제이컵의 방』(1922)을 발표해 큰 반향을 일으켰다. 이후 평론, 집필, 강연 등 활발한 활동을 펼쳤으며, 모더니즘 문학의 걸작으로 평가받는 『댈러웨이 부인』(1925), 『등대로』(1927), 『올랜도』(1928), 『파도』(1931) 등의 소설들과 페미니즘 필독서가 되다시피 한 『자기만의 방』(1929) 등 여러 편의 산문들을 발표했다. 제2차 세계 대전이 발발하면서 시골집으로 피신했지만, 심해지는 정신 질환으로 고통받다가 1941년 3월 이른 아침 강가로 나가 스스로 생을 마감했다. 제임스 조이스, 마르셀 프루스트 등과 함께 20세기 모더니즘 문학의 거장으로 손꼽히는 버지니아 울프는, 오늘날 영문학의 기념비적 작가이자 페미니즘 비평의 선구자로 평가받는다.
