애나 번스(지은이)
1962년 북아일랜드 벨파스트에서 태어났다. 『밀크맨』 이전까지 단 두편의 장편과 한편의 중편만을 발표한 무명에 가까운 작가였지만, 2018년 세번째 장편 『밀크맨』으로 북아일랜드 출신으로는 처음 부커상을 수상하며 일약 세계적 작가 반열에 올랐다. 같은 작품으로 2019년에 전미도서비평가협회상과 뛰어난 정치소설에 주어지는 오웰상을 받고 여성소설상 최종 후보에 올랐으며, 2020년에 국제 더블린 문학상을 받았다. 자신이 나고 자란 벨파스트의 마을 아도인을 배경으로, 한 소녀와 이웃들의 일상을 통해 북아일랜드 무장독립투쟁 시기를 그린 첫번째 장편 『노 본스』로 2001년 영국왕립문학회에서 수여하는 위니프리드홀트비 기념상을 받았으며, 2002년 오렌지 소설상(현 여성소설상) 최종 후보에 오르기도 했다. 2007년에 발표한 두번째 장편 『작은 구조물』은 폐쇄적인 범죄자 가족 내 여성을 주인공으로 내세웠다. 그밖의 작품으로 중편 「대체로 영웅」이 있다. 저자 사진 ⓒ Eleni Stefanou
