노바이올렛 불라와요(지은이)
짐바브웨가 영국의 식민지배로부터 독립한 이듬해인 1981년에 촐로초에서 태어났다. 열여덟 살이 되던 해 미국 미시간 주 캘러머주로 이주했다. 2009년 단편소설 「스냅숏」이 J. M. 쿳시가 심사한 남아프리카 펜/스터드진스키 상 후보에 오르며 주목을 받기 시작했다. 2011년에는 단편소설 「부다페스트 가는 길」로 케인 상을 수상했다. 2013년 첫 장편소설 『우리에겐 새 이름이 필요해』를 발표했다. 이 작품으로 펜/헤밍웨이 신인 소설상을 수상하고 아프리카 여성 최초로 맨 부커 상 최종 후보에 올랐다. 불라와요의 초기 작품을 소개하기도 한, 보스턴 리뷰의 편집자이자 퓰리처상 수상 작가인 주노 디아스는 ‘5 Under 35’(전미도서상 수상자 및 최종심 후보자들이 뽑는 젊은 작가 5인)에 노바이올렛 불라와요를 선정하며 남다른 애정을 과시하기도 했다. 그 외에도 『우리에겐 새 이름이 필요해』는 불라와요에게 허스턴/라이트 레거시 어워드 소설 부문, 에티살랏 문학상, 로스앤젤레스 타임스 신인 소설상을 안겼다. 이 책은 뉴욕 타임스 등 각종 언론이 선정한 2013년 올해의 책에 포함되어 독자들의 큰 사랑을 받았다. 노바이올렛 불라와요는 코넬 대학교에서 문학 석사학위 과정을 마치고 2012년부터 2014년까지는 스탠퍼드 대학교 문예창작 과정 특기생으로 재학했다. 현재 스탠퍼드 대학교에서 소설을 강의하고 있다.
