1961년 오스트레일리아 퍼스에서 태어나, 웨스턴 오스트레일리아 대학에서 수학 학위를 취득한 후 대학 병원 부속 의학 연구소에서 컴퓨터 프로그래머로 일하며 SF 작품을 쓰기 시작했다. 1990년대 초부터 잡지에 중·단편을 발표하면서, SF계에 돌풍을 일으킨 ‘하드 SF 르네상스’의 대표 주자로 각광을 받았다.장편 데뷔작이자 〈주관적 우주론〉 3부작의 첫 작품 『쿼런틴』(1992)으로 디트머상을, 그 후속작인 『순열 도시(Permutation City)』(1994)로 존 W. 캠벨 기념상·디트머상을, 『비탄(Distress)』(1995)으로 쿠르트 라스비츠상·세이운상을 수상했다. 이후 장편 SF인 『디아스포라(Diaspora)』(1997), 『테라네시아(Teranesia)』(1999), 『실트의 사다리(Schild’s Ladder)』(2001)를 잇달아 발표하며 명실공히 21세기 최고의 하드 SF 작가로서의 명성을 확립했다.중·단편집으로는 『행동 공리(Axiomatic)』(1995), 『루미너스(Luminous)』(1998), 『오셔닉(Oceanic)』(2009), 『잠과 영혼(Sleep and the Soul)』(2023) 등이 있으며, 「오셔닉」, 「플랑크 다이브(The Planck Dive)」, 「보더가드(Border Guards)」로 휴고상·로커스상·아시모프상·세이운상 등의 저명한 SF 문학상을 수상했다.(홈페이지: www.gregegan.net)
