반다나 싱(지은이)
인도 출신의 SF 작가이자 이론물리학자로, 인도 뉴델리에서 나고 자랐다. 어릴 때부터 자연에 대한 관심이 많아 고등학교 시절에 이미 환경 운동 그룹을 결성해 활동했고, 인도에서 시작해 전 세계로 퍼져나간 여성주의 환경 운동인 칩코 운동을 통해 페미니즘을 만났다. 칩코 운동은 테니스 라켓 제조회사인 사이먼이 히말라야 산간의 호두나무와 물푸레나무를 벌채해 원목을 생산하려 하자 100여 명의 마을 여성들이 나무에 몸을 묶은 채 저항하며 시작된 운동으로, 반다나 싱은 이 운동을 통해 인도에 뿌리 깊은 카스트와 계급 및 경제적 문제들이 나머지 90%의 삶을 어떻게 결정하는지를 직접적으로 깨닫는 패러다임의 전환을 경험했다고 밝혔다. 반다나 싱이 대학에서 물리학을 전공한 것 역시 자연에 대한 관심사의 확장으로, 공부를 계속해 미국에서 이론입자물리 연구로 박사 학위를 받았다. 그 후 인도 첸나이에 있는 과학연구소에서 일하다가, 결혼과 함께 미국 보스턴으로 이주해 지금까지 살고 있다. 육아 및 “취업 시장의 포화”로 학계를 오랫동안 떠나 딸을 홈스쿨링하며 지내다가, 딸과 남편, 동생의 독려로 SF를 쓰기 시작해 2002년 단편 <다락방>을 잡지 <폴리포니>에 싣기 시작하며 본격적인 작가의 길에 올랐다. 이후 꾸준히 비평가들이 주목하는 SF 작품을 계속 발표하는 동시에, 다시 학생들을 가르치기 시작해 현재 매사추세츠주의 프레이밍햄 주립대학교에서 물리학 및 지구과학 교수로 재직 중이다. 최근에는 북극 기후 변화에 대 한 사례 연구 등을 진행하고 있다. 반다나 싱의 단편들은 영국 SF 협회상 및 제임스 팁트리 주니어상, 로커스상 최종 후보에 꾸준히 오르고 있으며, 2008년 칼 브랜든 소사이어티상을 수상했다. 칼 브랜든 소사이어티상은 SF와 판타지, 호러 등의 분야에서 유색인종에 대한 차별에 항의해 백인이 아닌 작가들의 작품만을 선정 대상으로 한정해 유색인종 작가들의 작품 활동을 격려해왔다. 작가의 첫 소설집인 이 책 《자신을 행성이라 생각한 여자》의 영어 외 언어로의 번역은 2016년 프랑스에 이어 한국이 두 번째이다. 2018년 반다나 싱은 두 번째 소설집 《모호한 기계》를 출간했다.
