"At the age of 22 I was sent to Saigon to cover the war as a photojournalist. I was too late for Indochina, and too early for Vietnam. Muggers robbed me on my arrival, and I lived in a small hotel by the river. I drove towards the front in an old Citroen. I think I was happy.
I returned some years later. It was for another war, and the famous reporters had left. The streets were full of GIs and their girlfriends, of blind bomb victims and so many children returning to school. It was the end of an epoch, people would hand flowers to the soldiers. Everybody wanted to leave, and it was cheap to stay at luxury hotels. To forget my heartache, I got drunk and walked the streets all day. The city was very generous and welcomed me with open arms, so I lost sense of time. I stayed for months in this city that no longer exists.
The last time I went there I was at peace with things, and at the War Remnants Museum I visited my friends who had died on the battlefield.

레몽 드파르동(지은이)
프랑스 빌프랑슈 쉬르 손 출생. 사진가이자 영화감독, 시나리오 작가, 언론인. 다큐멘터리 사진과 영화의 거장으로 꼽힌다. 통신사 <달마> 소속 사진가로 활동한 후 1966년 질 카롱과 공동으로 사진전문 통신사 <감마>를 설립했으며, 1979년부터 <매그넘> 회원으로 일했다. 종군기자로서 베트남, 알제리 전쟁부터 아프리카, 중동, 아시아 분쟁 지역을 가장 오래 취재한 백전노장이다. 영화 분야에서 혁신적 수법을 개발한 이후, 지금은 사진의 새로운 장을 모색하고 있다. 특히 1980년대 이후 텔레비전과 인터넷 등 다양한 통신매체의 보급으로 주춤하는 신문보도사진에서 사진의 참신한 활용을 모색하던 언론의 대변혁기에 중요한 몫을 했다. 2006년 유럽 사진의 전당 개인전을 비롯해 프랑스 국립도서관 ‘레몽 드파르동의 프랑스’, 그랑 팔레 ‘그토록 포근한 순간’ 등 수차례 대규모 개인전을 열었으며, 《코르시카》《정치인 사진》《여행자의 행복한 고독》 외에 수십 권의 사진집을 펴냈다. 《방랑》은 그의 원숙기를 대표하는 첫 번째 사진집이다. <사진기자들> <사막의 포로> <응급실> <단신> 등의 영화를 제작했다. ‘국가 사진대상’, ‘세자르 단편영화 최고상’, ‘세자르 다큐멘터리 영화 최고상’, ‘루이 들뤽 상’의 여러 권위 있는 상을 받았으며, 2010년 프랑스 정부가 제정한 ‘올해의 문화 인물’에 선정되었다.
