영국의 과학작가이자 천체물리학자. 방대한 지식을 바탕으로 평생토록 과학과 과학자에 대한 생생한 글쓰기 방법을 연구했고, 어려운 개념을 쉽게 풀어 설명하는 능력이 탁월하다. 지금까지 양자물리학, 진화와 유전, 기후변화와 지구온난화, 우주의 기원은 물론 유명 과학자들의 전기, SF 소설 등 100여 권의 책을 저술한 ‘대중과학계에서 가장 뛰어나고 왕성한 다작가’로 평가받는다. 지금은 고전이 된 《슈뢰딩거의 고양이를 찾아서》(1984)는 물리학 대중화의 첫 물결을 연 작품으로, BBC에 의해 수학에 대한 관심을 되살리는 방법의 성공적인 사례로 상찬받았다. 서식스대학교에서 물리학과 천문학을 공부하고, 1971년 케임브리지대학교에서 천체물리학 박사 학위를 받았다. 프레드 호일의 이론천문학연구소에서 일하다가 전업 과학작가가 되어 《네이처》 《뉴사이언티스트》 등에서 일했고, 《타임스》 《가디언》 《인디펜던트》 등의 과학면에 많은 글을 발표했다. 현재 서식스대학교 천문학과 객원연구원으로 있다. 영국과학작가협회가 수여하는 평생공로상(2009)을 비롯해 다수의 상을 수상했다. 주요 저서로 《과학자들》 《슈뢰딩거의 고양이를 찾아서》 《에르빈 슈뢰딩거와 양자 혁명》 《빙하기》 《멀티버스를 찾아서》 《태초에》 《138억 년》 《우주에서 홀로》 《양자 미스터리》 《스티븐 호킹의 삶과 과학》 《아인슈타인의 삶과 과학》 《다윈의 삶과 과학》 《리처드 파인만의 삶과 과학》 등이 있다.
