The essential shape, form and structure of some objects in our daily lives may have been fixed one, ten, or even a hundred generations ago; but the role of designers has become increasingly prominent in a society that in less than half a century has gone from a restless search for the new to recycling of materials.
Manufacturers are using design more systematically than ever before to shape their marketing and make their products more attractive, while designers have sought to raise the status of their activity to that of an art form. Peter Dormer defines with great clarity the contexts within which designers work, and surveys the wide range of postwar activity, including industrial and product design, graphics, furniture, textiles, kitchen utensils and tableware.

피터 도머(지은이)
20세기 디자인과 응용미술을 전공한 영국의 다지인 이론가이자 전시기획자이다. 배스 미술 아카데미 Bath Academy of Art와 브리스톨 대학교 University of Bristol에서 수학했으며 1992년에 '디자인과 생산에 있어서의 실제적 기술과 개념적 기술'에 대한 논문으로 영국왕립미술대학 RCA에서 박사학위를 받았다. 지은 책으로 <1945년 이후의 디자인 Design since 1945>(1993) <현대디자인의 의미 The Meanings of Modern Design>(1990) <뉴 세라믹스 The New Ceramics>(1986) <뉴 퍼니처 The New Furniture>(1987) 등이 있다.
